Every year, we hear about reports of children drawning. Why isn't swimming a course given in school in the US? An enfant can learn how to swim within weeks.

You mean like at a lower grade like in 3rd grade or something or even almost to just little toddlers?

I wonder the same thing. if enfants can just learn how to float in the water for 5 minutes max at least...it could reduce the percentage of infants drowning by a good amount!

Swim lessons in school would probably not be a good thing. First off, you have to have a pool. Which in itself requires lots of maintenance, so you'd need extra employees for that. Plus lifeguards, plus swim instructors, plus someone to organize everything. It'd be too difficult.

You are faulty in your logic though, because an infant simply can't start learning to swim within weeks. True, you have have a infant in the water and get them used to the feeling, but a child can't really start learning the basics till around 3 or 4. Even at that, they won't be strong enough to just go to a pool and swimm without assistance till 6-8 years old. You're local YMCA or other programs should offer swim lessons. They do cost you, but they are worth it. You can't blame the school systems for everything. That's why the children have parents....sometimes they need to take the iniciative and do it themselves.

It is sad when a child drowns and believe me, I've heard of multiple cases. But, again, you need to make sure that your child can swim if you're that worried.

Do you mean DROWNING? Swimming courses are given in the USA. It is the parents decision to either go or not, and you are right about babies INFANTS learning to swim easily. I took my three week old baby girl into the pool with me and let her swim and she has been an excellent swimmer for the past 27 years.
