In 1263, the Norwegian king Haakon the Old used Kirkwall as a base for his fruitless attempt to maintain Norse rule over the Western Isles.

After his crushing defeat at the Battle of Largs on October 2, 1263, Haakon's battered fleet returned to Kirkwall, where the King fell ill and died in the Bishop's Palace.

In 1263 King Haakon of Norway was at war with the Scottish king Alexander III over the Hebrides islands.
Haakon invaded the west of Scotland. His army met the Scots at Largs. Scottish accounts claim this battle as a victory.

As a side note - during the same time period - Kublai Khan ruled the huge Mongol empire. The Mongols had sacked Baghdad and taken Korea but were stopped by Japan in the east and Vietnam in the south. The Vietnamese turned back several Mongol invasions in the late 1200s. Scotland and Norway were a small sideshow on the world stage.
