If I hooked up any new dvd burner to my computer will it work with Ubuntu 7.10. If so how would I go about setting it up,
would i have to download the software for it online and run it through wine or something?

Drives don't require software, yes the drive should work. Their is not any reason i shouldn't. You plug in the new drive and simply set it to slave or master in your bios setting. Make sure the drive itself is set to master or slave via jumper settings on the rear of the drive.

Ubuntu should detect the drive. If it doesn't work, make sure that it is mounted first. You can mount and unmount drives by right clicking on the drive's icon.

Ubuntu and other Linux flavors come with burning software. It is called K3b. It may look like Klllb.

No reason why not.
Ubuntu is pretty good at picking up most hardware.
