Vintage = Marilyn Monroe while Singing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy, Tight,Long Nude colored rhinstone covered dress.
Modern= Hilary Swank at the academy award show, Long Blue pleat detailed backless gown.

Don't remember who wore it, but there was a fabulously diamond or rhinestone covered cocktail dress worn by a celebrity a few years ago to the Oscars. Everyone was talking about it.

By the way, althought the dress is essential, let's not forget that in general that's the person who's wearing it who gives it his elegance.
Even with a beggar dress or with a jail-dress, Béyoncé or Eva Mendes would look one thousand times more attractive than any common woman who's even wearing a diamond-made dress...
