There's a big lie, encouraged by the media, that conformity is a safety net. If companies can convince people--- a LOT of people----to purchase certain products, then the people who run the companies get rich. In order for that to happen, people are going to have to believe that they simply aren't as good as the next person unless they own these certain products. So, one reason conformity is valued is that we are bombarded with ads telling us that if we don't wear this, or do that, or whatever, we're not cool. Another reason is that there is a certain amount of comfort in anonymity. It requires less creativity, less effort all around. Personally, I think individuality rocks.

Being an individual is the only way to go.Copying a person's style or way of life is a cop out.You never know your full potential unless you are an idividual.

Yes, I do. I think my ability to be my own person is the most precious asset I have. I might even say the most precious legacy My Steve left me, because I learned how to think for myself by handing my life over to him and having him teach me how to be independent. He used to say "At any time, without warning, I may assume you know what you are doing." I felt I had to live up to that, but it was hard there for awhile after he committed suicide. I had to believe that he trusted I could make my own decisions.

To stand alone, lead without conviction, without consideration of the sacrifice or the cost, is a sign of a "leader". Sometimes, it can just take one person to awaken our senses " The civil rights Movement" and sometimes it can take just one person to change our conscientiousness "the Holocaust".
