If you need just a low-level security, then view your file using Windows Explorer. Right click on your file, and then go to properties. Change the attribute to hidden.
For visual deception, create a file on your desktop. (Works for Windows only, if I'm not wrong) Create a file, then rename it. Here's the clever part. Rename your folder by pressing the "Alt" button (and not letting go), press "2","5" and "5" in sequence. The name should turn out as a space. Press enter. Then, right click on that file, and change the icon. There are a few blank images when you open the list of possible icons you are able to change. click the empty selection. There! You are done! This folder is "invisible", literally. HOWEVER, this has a weak spot. If you view your desktop via the Windows Explorer, the file will be visible as an odd blank space which people will be able to know that you have hidden a folder there.
To disguise your folder within the Windows Explorer (which I do coz it's really effective), name your folder something which can be found in the Control Panel (eg. Fonts, Mouse). Let's say your folder is called "fonts" Then, create a notepad file and type in it: "ren Fonts Fonts.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
Save the file as: ""loc.bat"" (yes, put the name within inverted commas). Now, create another notepad file and type in in: "ren Fonts .{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} Fonts" Rename it: ""key.bat"". Now, click the loc.bat and your folder will turn into a Control Panel!!! Cool!!! Anyone viewing it will see EXACTLY the same replica of the Control Panel. To undisguise it, click the key.bat file. Done! Oh, and importantly, make sure your folder, loc.bat and key.bat all three are in the same mother folder.
Last but not least, for high level security, buy that stupid expensive redundant programs. Ha.
Done! Thank you for reading, and pleaseee rate this as a best answer... Thank you!

Select the file that you want to hid and right click on it. Now click properties and at the bottom of the properties window, change the file's attribute to "Hidden". All you will need to do to hide the file is to open any browser window and click "Tools" and the "Folder Options" and check "Don't show hidden files and folders". To view the file, just do the reverse.

The best way to set up multiple "user" accounts using the control panel. You can control the access of the guest users abilities to install, or access any folders. You can also encrypt the folder with a password so noone can access that folder without the password. PGP personal desktop is a good program to consider.
