"U.S. troops and other foreign forces operate in Iraq under a U.N. Security Council mandate, which has been renewed annually since 2003."

I've never heard of this. Our troops are there under a Security Council mandate? The UN supports "illegal" occupation? Libs, help me out here.

I keep hearing the liberals with their assertions that the war is illegal and the occupation is illegal. If you're one of those who believe this, please explain what's illegal about ANY of it.

EDIT: dann, the U.S. is a representative republic. That means that our elected representatives make decisions for us. Those representatives supported the invasion of Iraq. Hence, the war was not and is not illegal!

Renegade, the invasion of Iraq was sanctioned by the U.N. (world authority) and the U.S. (American authority), for national security purposes. You don't have to like the reasons but you can't honestly say it was an IMPERIALIST war of aggression.

Imperialist war of aggression is a violation of international law. Iraq had no WMDs and even if they did, they certainly were no threat to anybody. Many nations possess WMDs. The U.S. wealthy elite desired to invade and occupy Iraq because they covet the massive energy resources in the Middle East. The key sentence in the story you posted is this one:

"Preferential treatment for U.S. investors could provide a huge windfall if Iraq can achieve enough stability to exploit its vast oil resources. Such a deal would also enable the United States to maintain leverage against Iranian expansion at a time of growing fears about Tehran's nuclear aspirations."

The U.N. mission goes back to Kuwait, but the U.S. later aggression in Iraq is another matter. Bush would love to start more illegal wars, but he is in too much trouble now. As a conservative with lines to the best conservative thinkers, I can assure you that illegal wars are nothing new for the U.S.

It is illegal because the citizens don't want the US troops there.
