You can use a foundation brush to be able to fan out your foundation and reach in those tricky spots, but also clean fingers work really well. When using your fingers, make pressing circular motions. The technique is good in blending the foundation into your skin and make it look more natural. The slight pressing creates warmth and melts the foundation into the skin and the circular motion blends it well.
For me:
1st: apply foundation to the neccessary spots of your face and spread it well.
2nd: use your fingers to blend it better for a flawless finish
3rd: finish with a light dusting of mineral powder

I like to use a sponge, because I wear only a tiny bit of foundation around my nose and on my chin, and I've found that the kind of small sponge that comes in a foundation compact is easiest for dabbing, which is how I apply it. (And I wash the sponge frequently.) But many makeup artists prefer using their fingers and suggest you do, too, because your hands warm the foundation, helping it melt into your complexion. At a beauty event not long ago, we were given a foundation brush, which I tried, partly because they were so encouraging and partly because I didn't want to seem like a stick-in-the-mud. Now I know why you might want to use a brush: It's contoured so you can reach areas like the corners of your nose (I never knew the nose had corners; did you?) and right up under your lower lashes, which can be hard to get at evenly with your fingers or a sponge. So what am I saying here? I use a sponge, but a brush is good, and using your fingers gives a more even application.
Bottom line: There's no best way to apply foundation. Try them all. Have fun. Find what you like best.

The BEST way to apply liquid foundation is with a foundation brush, sponges absorb your foundation (which wastes it), and they also house bacteria, your fingers will work but they tend to just spread the foundation around your face, and provide a less even application. The foundation brush will make your foundation last about three months longer... and they can be washed once or twice a week in luke warm water with your facial cleanser (no bacteria). Try this test out... take a mirror and put a few drops of foundation on it..... spread it out like you would on your face... with your fingers..... now do the same thing with the foundation brush... the makeup goes a lot farther alot more evenly...... Just remember when using a brush you need alot LESS makeup.... to much will produce brush marks on your face!

its better with a brush i done it with my fingers and its always a mess a brush i dont know why but its better You can use a makeup brush indefinitely as long as you take care of it. Most of the make up brushes should last more then 10 years .for foundation brushes use a TAKLON brush you will see the difference when you use a brush. try it and you wont regret and if you do you also need to learn how to take care of a brush After using your foundation brush each morning clean with a brush cleaner. Simply spray the brush with the cleaner and wipe on a paper towel until it comes free of color. Let it dry on it’s side laying flat so that the cleaner doesn’t puddle in the ferule of your brush {the metal part} . This will keep your bristles clean and strong. Once a week wash all your brushes with baby shampoo. It’s gentle and will rid your brush of any color that is rooted deep in the bristles. Again let it dry flat. try Sephora Make Up Brush Cleansing Wipes (ideal for travel) or Japonesque Professional Brush Cleaner (dries quickly). Vinegar and Water: Use 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar, dip your brushes in the mixtures and rinse clean in warm water. This will disinfect your brushes so if multiple people use them, this is a great option over a brush cleaner.

Brush all the way! My friend Ange told me about year ago get a foundation brush, you get much more even coverage, did I take any notice of her? No of course I didn't, £8.00 for a brush!!
Then in the sale at T J Hughes 2 weeks ago I found a Revlon foundation brush reduced to £2.99 so I got it, I cannot believe the difference it's brilliant I have been telling anyone that will listen to get one. :)

I would have to agree that a CLEAN hand it always the best way to apply foundation. It will blend better and the warmth from your fingers will help it spread evenly. It's easy to pile it on too thick when you use a brush. If you have any trouble with it looking fake, try mixing in a little dab of moisturizer.
Good Luck!

If it is a powder foundation then use a brush. If it is a compressed powder/liquid then use a make-up sponge. You should never use your hand to apply foundation because it only adds oil and unnecessary bacteria onto your skin!
Good luck.

fingers or sponges, of course fingers are better all you have to do is wash them first. I like sponges, but you have to remember after a while to change them out. In fact, when i change sponges, i change foundation too, because i use a creme and i feel like there is no point buying a new sponge for a makeup i've been using
