The mind is an activity
Does it exist. It exists when you engage it.
What does it take care of, in truth - nothing. On a moment to moment basis, if engaged it has some information of use eg, where I live, what is my phone no, my childs name, where people live.
The disturbance it creates in ones life, if allowed it can run amok, and cause decisions to be made as a reaction only, it can put you in the wrong place at the wrong time, it can say silly things without one knowing, it is a unruly child, poking here and there, probing, curious, ever curious, never sitting still, always wanting in, needing acknowledgement, a limitation, competitive, brash, loud and a vexation to the soul.
Then of course there is the higher mind, connected to all that is.
Where do you dwell?
Blessings be
Peace in the Heart

You have at last come to the right point. Yes Mind is what directs, recognizes and try to dominate too. Therefore it is clear that mind controls the entire action of the Jeevathma. That is why people are stated to be in the Mayaloga, as mind believes and directs. Thus it is clear that the Karma committed by people are the direct consequence of the actions directed by the mind. Atheists also are prompted to refer the same work of mind as reasoning or Logic. But then, when you use your Intellect or Gnana, you find that the actions of mind or Logic is nothing but illussion and the absolute or Paramathma is seen not with the use of mind, but with the use of Intellect. This is called Gnana or Knowledge. If you do not have the needed Gnana to go beyond what your mind directs then you are in the Agnana loga and you would not see the truth that Soul is immortal and keeps taking new births to pay back the Karmic dues. You can experience only if you agree to find a Satguru and learn from him.

This is the closest analogy I can come up with:
The organ called the brain generates the mind the way a generator generates electricity. You can inderectly measure electricity and you can indirectly measure the mind.
The electrical/chemical firing of the synapes of the brain is not the mind but a biological process which generates the mind.
I feel the comparison between a generator and the brain (and not a computer with a program) generating another state (electricity and mind) is the strongest analogy that can be made. So if one takes the view of a brain generating the mind in one's research, I feel the quicker the researcher will discover the precise cause of the mind/body duality.

Mind does exist and it takes care of the human evolution. The disturbances it often creates are like the waves on a rough sea but these will ultimately settle down making the life seem more serene and sublime.

There are two schools of thought on this
A: The mind pretends to exist
B: Only the mind exists
The first school of thought is that the universe and everything in it is made of atoms, including the human brain, and that the mind could be called the body's "operating system", that it is the body's link to external existence, much in the same way computers use operating systems (Like Windows) to interact with the external world. The mind only pretends to exist because our mind is dictated by the passage of bioelectricity through neurons, thus free will is an illusion. The electric signals in our brain's neutrons act in a manner that makes us believe that we are in control of ourselves.
The second school of thought is that of Hegelianism and Nietzscheism. The mind is an independent entity, the body is its vessel for manipulation of its own created reality. Free Will either exists (because it is necessary in order for us to create our own personal reality) or it is an illusion because our mind is being subjected to external manipulation (a la "The Matrix")
The truth is that we are not entirely sure which is correct. It could be that to my reality, you are nothing more than a collection of patterns on my computer that my mind calls a language, which I recognize in order to create a subconsciously granted challenge, in which I induce myself to create my own reality. Of course, it could be that I am just another piece of self-replicating, sapient space dust, using the fundamental forces of nature to communicate with another piece of sapient space dust, which is you, the person that sometime in the future will sit down at a computer and read what this piece of space dust has to say.

We know that a thing called mind exists because we are using it right now to read, analyze, and make judgments. It is similar to a computer, except that it is more far reaching and more powerful. For example, a computer can't think about itself but a mind can. Our minds are not our souls or spirits, but are part of them. People who are "out of their minds" cannot make good judgments. So their minds are like a broken piece of their souls or spirits. A healthy mind can be changed to grow in knowledge and wisdom, and make good choices in life. It is different from the soul which is the essence of our make up and unique to each individual.

of course it does exist u fool...
Mind collectively refers to the aspects of intellect and consciousness manifested as combinations of thought, perception, memory, emotion, will and imagination; mind is the stream of consciousness. It includes all of the brain's conscious processes. This denotation sometimes includes, in certain contexts, the working of the human sub-conscious or the conscious thoughts of animals. "Mind" is often used to refer especially to the thought processes of reason.
There are many theories of the mind and its function. The earliest recorded works on the mind are by the Buddha, Plato, Aristotle, Adi Shankara and other ancient Greek and Indian philosophers. Pre-scientific theories, based in theology, concentrated on the relationship between the mind and the soul, the supposed supernatural, divine or god-given essence of the person. Modern theories, based on scientific understanding of the brain, theorise that the mind is a phenomenon of the brain and is synonymous with consciousness.
The question of which human attributes make up the mind is also much debated. Some argue that only the "higher" intellectual functions constitute mind: particularly reason and memory. In this view the emotions - love, hate, fear, joy - are more "primitive" or subjective in nature and should be seen as different from the mind. Others argue that the rational and the emotional sides of the human person cannot be separated, that they are of the same nature and origin, and that they should all be considered as part of the individual mind.
In popular usage mind is frequently synonymous with thought: It is that private conversation with ourselves that we carry on "inside our heads." Thus we "make up our minds," "change our minds" or are "of two minds" about something. One of the key attributes of the mind in this sense is that it is a private sphere to which no one but the owner has access. No-one else can "know our mind." They can only know what we communicate.

Mind is like a giant snowball that starts out as a tiny fist full of flakes.
It 'gathers' data as it rolls along through life and one learns to live from that gathered information. And that's all it is, 'gathered information'. Our identity, belief systems, cultural training, etc. is all wrapped up in this giant snowball. Packed in real tight.
When one has realized something is 'amiss' and starts searching, the massive ball continues to grow in size. Then, if one is lucky, one realizes that feeding this mind-ball only strengthens it!
The 'melt down' starts when the searing eyes of AWARENESS are present. Awareness allows for a more natural existence, not one lived in the frozen, time-bound, thought world.
When thoughts arise, as they constantly do, they are watched by one who is no longer caught up in their karmic influence. More and more they are sucessfully ignored.
In 'time', the substance of the identity (past/future), the belief system, even culturally ingrained habits, melt away into nothing-ness.
Mind = suffering. It is good at making dental appointments. :)

OM, Yes mind does exist and in fact there is nothing BUT MIND once an individual is able to perceive the true depth of the mind. The mind is a third force between the physical and spiritual, natures. Hence in the tripartite understanding, their is body-mind-spirit and to a greater extent of being; physical-mental-spiritual natures. So the mind is the offspring of both the physical and spiritual nature, the plane of that interaction manifest. So there is nothing but mind, because everything which builds and is could be said to be a thought. In fact we abide within a Mind, our Higher Being of Light or Clear Light nature is MIND.
The mind is NEVER the brain and never has been the brain. The brain is a higher center of the physical body that the mind works through, like a conduit. But all the organs in the body are conduits to the mind, as the mind can express through any of the organ centers, which is why recent test and transplants have had interesting results of patients taking on attributes of those they received organs from. The brain is just merely the higher organ center for the mind, and the sex organs can be said to be the lower, which many think from. The mind itself is as a etheric field which surrounds the body, it animates the body and when we breath our breath interacts with our mind. The mind controls the flow of the vital energy in our body. The body itself as in its design when it comes to its organs and such is a pattern of the mind just projected into a physical denser ether. The facilities of thought in regards the mind is the movement of that essence, which as a octave of thought moves through the polarities of mind (which for the sake of discussion can be seen in the same ways as a battery that has both positive and negative charges which energy moves through, hence what I mean by polarities). In its pattern, it can be said that these polarity spheres/centers/charges are much like the organs in the body. How our organs in our body maintain a pattern of duality, but the operation of this duality in harmony creates an harmonious environment in the organism. This pattern as I suggested before is from the mind, as our mind dwells in a duality. Unlike the body which is to operate in harmony, the mind does not and we must bring about this harmonious nature in mind by bringing together those polarities to bring forth a third force product, or oneness.
Now the mind as I said naturally dwells in division, and at most man only utilizes a very limited potential of this mind, only that which corresponds to his earthly/organism nature alone. So the mind is undeveloped in most, and in its divided, fragmented state, it is a dis-ease. Much like how a disease in the body would be the organism turning against itself, the mind in its fragmented state is completely against itself. If it was to be styled as a world it would be within a world war. So the thoughts that come from such a mind are cyclic and never evolve and remain idle and low of vibration. Such can cause sickness, as these cyclic conditions are a product of ones thinking that becomes fossilized in the body on a cellular level, causing the lack of things that the body must feed upon for nutrients to addictions of emotions. The mind is the nature of movement, or building. Anything that one has will be by reason of what they have done in mind. Our thoughts interact with and affect all that we see, since all that we see is but vibrations of thoughts. When someone has a memory they actually move to that time within themselves, and the emotion can never be separated, since what is invoked in the past stays there and the aspect of that experience becomes a product in mind.
- Shalom
