If you just leave it there, it looks like you're sloppy too.

NO. Their mess is their mess, and that's all there is to it. Just try and keep it out of your area, and tell them to clean up after themselves, because you don't like living in filth! You're not their mother or father. You don't have time for that mess.

Call a house meeting and set up an agreement that the public areas of the house will be held to a reasonable standard of neatness. Specify what constitutes neatness in the living area--dirty dishes not in sink or on counters, personal belongings are in personal spaces not strewn about public spaces.

Make a chore list of who does what chores weekly (dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping) and rotate the chores if you must.

If your roommates aren't willing to keeping the public areas of the home neat and presentable for guests then you may need to look for new roommates for your own sanity.

I think you should clean it up, but ask them nicely if they could work harder at being more tidy in the future. Ask them if every Sunday night (or whenever), everyone could spend one hour cleaning together. That way you are not singling anyone out but everyone will have a time to work together and the house will get nice and clean without you having to do all the work.
Hope that helps.

I do a little of both. I can't stand for my house to be disorganized and dirty. Although, it's not in perfect order. I had to let go of that mentality because it was driving me nuts. I do get the family together and make them help out. Some days it's really good and others it's really bad. One thing I'm very adamant about is how my house smells and it always smells good. Good luck. 2D

I clean it up, I wouldn't want to get embarresed when having company over. But also ask them to do their share of house work/chores
