Diamond with a hardness of 10 is harder than quartz that has a hardness of 7 (Mohs Hardness Scale which is relative and doesn't measure true hardness), but according to absolute/true hardness using a sclerometer, a diamond is 15 times harder than quartz (1500:100; The hardness number is the weight in grams required to produce a standard scratch).

Diamond are the hardest material currently known. Their toughness comes from their compact crystaline structure. The process that forms diamonds begins under high pressure at least 90 miles underground.

Diamonds. But unlike the song Diamonds Are Forever, They are not necessarily forever. Diamonds are made entirely from carbon and will burn at high temperatures resulting in graphite. They will last forever if not heated to too high a temperature.
