First of all, I would bet you have a 6 cylinder engine! They are known for having head gasket problems!! White smoke (steam) and coolant from the exhaust are both signs of a failed head gasket or cracked head!

With the engine also knocking, you are looking at rebuilding or replacing the motor! Seeing as that is a 16 year old vehicle, unless it is very nice otherwise, it may be time to replace the car!

Sorry!!

probably a blown head gasket.... the best "redneck" way to check.... for sure if your head gasket is blown is to crank your car...... go behind the car and take a dollar bill and hold it behind your exhaust pipe.... if it blows outward it isnt the head gasket .... if it suck it to the pipe ... then you have a blown head gasket.... This really works too dont think i am crazy... hope this helps and good luck!
As for the knocking..... that is really hard to say .. depends on if it is a tick or a knock that gets louder as you acclerate.... If it is a ticking it could be a lifter.... if its a knock that gets louder then you hae problems...
