One of my friends lifted her eyes up with her fingers and said "Look I'm Jackie Chan!" Then my other friends started laughing too. I am half asian and I find that really offending. Even though I am half south east asian so I don't have those "asian eyes" as they call it but I still find that offending to asians. Am I overeacting or are they racist?

You may be over-reacting a bit.The comment was not made to insult or ridicule but rather in fun.

It is true that Asians to have the narrow eyes and some are tilted upward. (Almond Eyes) It is quite attractive, in fact, much more so than common caucasian which are rather plain.

It can't really be offending to Asians. You are only one of many so it may be offensive or insensitive for you.

It should not really be done, but it is not done to deliberately hurt or offend.

It's just my opinion but I tend to think that true racism is something a lot deeper than a simple joke about appearances. The real deal... real racism is when there is a deep seated hatred of those based solely on our external differences... like skin color, etc. Think of the KKK and that's the kind of stuff I mean. That's racism. All the rest is just social and cultural faux pas... meaningless gibberish that has no more meaning than when you laugh at a stand up comedian like George Carlin or Eddie Murphy.

I'd say ignorant rather than racist because these people might be unaware that they are offending you. Im not saying that your freinds were right to do what they did

i would find that offensive and thankfully my friends arent like that. however i wouldnt consider your friends racist, they probably are just unaware of how u feel. u should just let them know that this offends you and they should stop.

You should tell your friend you thought it was offensive. She probably didn't mean to offend you, though (if she's really your friend).

no you are not overreacting. No one would tolerate someone putting on black face and saying "look I'm black", so you shouldn't tolerate this. If you let them slide on this, then they might just slip up and say worse things. I would explain to them what they did is offensive to you and other people like you and you would appreciate it if they didn't do it again.

if it makes you uncomfortable when your friends say those things let them know. Educate them. Maybe they dont know when they say those things that it does hurt you.
