He will be staying with me for a while, And I know there is a chance he may want to install something on my computer to track what I look at online, emails etc. I work during the day, so I don't know what will be installed without my knowledge while I'm gone. I've done some research and a lot of these can be installed by a purchaser without your knowledge. That makes me nervous!

Oh my goodness, I didn't know so many people were going to make Personal comment. So let me clear something up, I meant EX boyfriend, but we are still friends, he just needs a place while he relocates to my area. I have a bad habit of saying boyfriend/girlfriend when talking about friends. I would like to thank those who answered my question instead of jumping to conclusions on my personal life. I will take your advice and open up a seperate acct, but I didn't know if that would prohibit him from putting a disc or downloading a program.

You should boot or SAFE BOOT (F8) to login with administrator rights.

Create two user accounts, one for you and one for him. You can give them any names but I will call the two user accounts YOU and HIM.

Give HIM REDUCED rights.

Password your accounts, administrator and YOU.

I think you are thinking of keylogger programs. Most virus checker type systems can detect and correct keyloggers. Try Spybot Search and Destroy.

Depending on your level of computer knowledge and your need for privacy, there are additional steps you can take to cloak your tracks.

Actually, the simplest idea is buy him a used PC. I've purchased complete, bootable systems on Craigslist.com for $150.

OMG it sounds like time to get a new boyfriend!
Let me get this straight, you will be working all day while he sits in your house and invades your Internet privacy, and you have to research ways to hide your computer activity from your own boyfriend?
Check out Datadoctors.com
They have free downloads that will detect keystrokes and stuff like that so you can check up on what he has been up to while checking up on what you have been up to...
I know this is none of my business, but that trust is the cornerstone of any good relationship. Maybe you should make a New Years resoloution to get into a healthier one....

Put a password on your account and open the "Guest" account for all others who use the computer. Then only you will be able to install software.

Wow... he's one possessive boyfriend. Is there much point in being in a relationship with him if he can't trust you and the things you do on the internet? Rather than finding a way to stop him installing it, maybe you should sit him down and have a talk to him about the trust issues between you both?

These programs are called keyloggers, and they work very well. Any good antivirus or antispyware program will have a keylogger remover in it. Some keyloggers are invisible to removers, but these are very rare and he would have to be very software savvy to find them. Password protect your account for sure. One thing you may want to ask yourself...........what do you have to hide, and if it's nothing, why is he so paranoid and controlling? Sounds like you need relationship help more than computer help...................

I agree with dawn , put a good password for your administrative
account and give him a limited user accout account , in
control panel you will see user accounts. That way he cant
install anything , and also it is your computer , tell him to
get his own.

Take the mouse and/or keyboard with you and say they need a repair or the one at work is broken and you need to bring yours from home. In addition, lock the whole thing up with passwords and give him a general one to use. You should see any changes, etc. that he makes and can then uninstall or delete them.
