I have a desktop eMachine that now won't start. The last couple of times I've used it when I go to log off of the interenet it stills seems to be connected. I turned the computer off last time and it started up but this time it won't start up at all. I get nothing out of it. Monitor still works. Everything else thats hooked up to that power surge still works.

It's the power supply which is an inexpensive part and is easy to replace.

You can purchase one from CompUSA, buy one used, or order one online.

Take a look at the back of the power supply; take a note of the wattage you'll be replacing; and buy one that is at minimum the same wattage as the one that went out.

When it arrives, it's a matter of removing a couple of screws and then unplugging and replugging the cables.

It's near foolproof to plug the cables incorrectly since they're designed and shaped to fit/seat in a certain way.

If you have a digital camera or a camera phone, you'll want to take a couple of snapshots for reference so that you'll know how many connections you need to make.

But...it's really an easy and inexpensive fix to do yourself.

Not even worth it to take to a shop which will charge you 1/2 of what a new eMachine costs.

When you press the power button, do the fans turn on. If so then the power supply is probably ok. If not, then I would test the power supply by using a known good one.

My emachines did the same thing a few months ago. It was the power supply.

the power supply could be shot or it could be the mother board
