It's called geriatric linguistic aphasia - technical way of saying that as you grow older, your mouth doesn't work as well. It happens to ALL of us to some extent as we grow older.
booman is right - he's always had that impediment (it's the result of his having a cleft palette) -- only to a lesser degree
