My boyfriend has never been able to swallow pills and he's too stubborn to even try. One friday after eating alot his stomach hurt and i gave him two pepto-bismol pills. I had to cut them up into little pieces and then put them in water just so he could take them. I was thinking of getting like sugar pills or something so he could practice. He can't even do liquid pills. he taked tylenol liquid when he is sick, which isn't often, but he does get an upset stomach and headaches often. This is bad. He can't even swallow soft noodles whole!

How can i help him?

This is a psychological problem that you are not going to fix. For some reason he believes he is going to choke and you standing there saying "just swallow the pills" is not going to get him to do it. Unless he wants to see a therapist or a hypotherapist he is going to have to use liquid medicine if anything at all. Besides, you don't always need to take medicine. There are numerous of other ways to take care of aches and pains.

First, you need to get him in to see a chiropractor to get rid of the headaches and any other cranial nerves involved. One of them has much to do with swallowing. I have that knowledge from personal experience. From a neck injury during football. Was unable to swallow at all. 4 days of it.. After a visit to a chiropractor, I got up and swallowed. So know the effectiveness of the treatments. Your bf has had some form of neck injury in the past and it has now created sufficient inflammation and irrittaiton to bring about varied symptoms.

There may have also been a childhood experience of choking when taking too large a bolus to swallow. I have had that experience also. Still have a problem with pills. But somehow I have survived for more than 70 years without much need of them. The need of a therapist seems a bit superfluous and non-critical. Is not infantile behavior, rather a psychological implant that has lasted a lifetime. Some of the flippant answers you received are misdirected and rather ignorant of facts, as they are presented.

Here's a couple of tricks.

Try having him eat a small amount of bread or some semi-chewy candy like Green Leafs. Have him hold off swallowing and pop the tablets into his mouth and swallow just before he's ready to swallow the bread/candy.

Try practicing with M&Ms or similar hard coated candy liker Reese's Pieces. That way if he can't swallow quickly, at least it is not some yucky medicine taste in his mouth.

Wow, you bf sounds a bit on the infantile side.. Maybe you should have his mother aid him in taking pills... OR just let him be and let him figure out how to handle the situation... It's his ultimate choice on whether or not he wants to take pills NOT yours.. good luck

Also, some types of medications/pills should NOT be cut up or put into liquids they lose their effectiveness.... Ask a pharmasist if he can crush the pills and put them into a syrup solution like they do for babies/children....

remember that the body's natural adversion to swallowing things whole is a natural safeguard against choking. So long as he's able to take required medicine, even if it is by chopping it into little pieces, then he's fine.

Crush them and mix them in water, tell him to hold his nose shut and drink it.
