What have I done that keeps attracting these annoying 'pop-ups' and what can I do to stop them?

Assuming you have a decent firewall and anti-virus already installed, most likely it was when you double clicked on some email attachment or downloaded and installed the 'viewer' from some porn site ...
Read up about virus / Trojans in general, see if you can identify the specific one are infected with (the HijackThis utility helps you identify what's running at start-up and from your Registry)
You could also try using 'system restore' to go back to a point before you were infected ..
