I just got a new computer that has the wireless LAN already in it.. I bought a wireless router for it.. As I was trying to connect it last night I was having difficulty. I used the help CD that came with the Linksys router, but it never established a connection and acted like something was hooked up right.

I ended up using the internet connection wizard that popped up when I first turned the computer on. It connected right up. My question/concern is it says that it's not a secure connection. Is there anyway to secure my connection? Did I do something wrong??

No you didn't do anything wrong. It is that your net work is not secure and other people can use it and see what your doing on it if they have the proper programs. What you need to do to secure it is login to the router and enable the wep/wpa encryption. Try and use the wpa encryption since it is more secure if you can. Since I don't know what kind of wireless router you have I can't be more help but if you email/IM me I can walk you through it.

In the manual that came with you router, there should be instructions for enabling the security features, for this router. You will need to know the IP of the router to do this. If it is not listed in the manual or if your computer has assigned it a different IP, then open the command prompt, Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt. At the prompt, type:
ipconfig/all. This will list all of your system IP's.

Not encrypting a WIFI signal leaves it open to the public. That means it can be read by anyone in your local area with a WIFI capable computer.

I'm sure you didn't know that you would need to do this, but all of us who run a WIFI network must encrypt our signals.
