I want to install an IKEA halogen light fixture in my kitchen. It has black, white and striped green wires. My ceiling mounting has 2 paired black, 2 paired white,1 red and copper wires.I forgot to note how the old fixture was wired:(.

I tried black-on-black & white-on-white but the halogen fixture does not light up.Red-on-black & white-on-white,the light is always ON.

I tried red-on-black, white-on-white and black-on-striped green. The halogen light switches on and off however when i switch on another kitchen light the circuit break trips, which does not happen before.

The fixtures' switch that I am replacing have a red and black wire attached to it.

Help!

Don't listen to those idiots babbling about 3 way
switches. They should keep silent when
they haven't a clue.

Try red on black, white on white, green stripe to ground (copper).

The stripped green is a ground and should be
connected to a bare ground wire.
It should NOT be connected to the black,
(which is connected to your other light),
that's what's tripping your breaker.

The black wire at the switch is your power wire,
the red is the 'leg` to the fixture.

black on black, white on white is the correct way to wire the fixture. You do have a 3-way switch (2 switches that control from different locations). Or, you have a split circuit. Since the light works the last way you wired it, remove the black-on-striped green, and attach the stripe-green to the copper wires. Every thing should be fine. next time write down the connections before removing the old light.

should be black/black then white/white and the green is a ground hook to the copper and in the future just take a big pair of cutters and cut the whole thing leaving the old fixture still wired laying on the floor, this way you know where they went.

Sounds like you have a 3-way switch? See link below....
