A lot depends on the physical location of the laptop and Sprint's towers in your area.
Go to Sprint.com and pull up the "EVDO" coverage map. If you don't see you town highlighted in orange, then you are not in an area that has broadband-like speeds just yet.
If you are in 1X-RTT coverage, you will see speeds similar to dial-up connections.
One thing may help. On the computer's desktop, you should see "Sprint connection manager. Open it, and select the "Settings" tab. Look for a "data roaming" setting, and switch it to "roaming only". IF there is a high speed signal provided by a Sprint roaming partner, you should be able to pick it up and the connection will be faster.
If that doesn't work, make sure you change the setting back to "automatic" so you will regain the Sprint proprietary signal.

Could be a number of things. Could be you ISP service, your computer is bogged down, or the router, just to mention a few.
