This is a series of programs that will work in concert to provide you with a top notch free security suite. I am an IT tech and this is what I recommend for a great free, security suite.
Download Antivir, which is the best free antivirus and is better than all but the best paid for programs. Here is the website:

Next I would recommend that you download Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, just in case you have other malware on your pc that will not be caught by an antivirus cleaner. Its totally free and the best spyware remover on the market, period.

Then as a firewall I would recommend that you download Comodo firewall which is a great free firewall that does not leak like many commercial brands and it is totally free.

Also for added malware protection you can also download BoClean which runs silently in your background and prevents malware from installing on your pc. Once again it is totally free and it works great.

I would also recommend that you download CCleaner to remove temporary internet files, cookies, internet history, etc. from your pc.

I completely agree with Reed Richards post and recommendations. Avira AntiVir has the best detection rates and uses the lowest system resources of all the free antiviruses.
I would personally recommend A-Squared free & SUPERAntiSpyware for the free spyware scanners.
The best firewall is definitely Comodo.
I would NOT recommend Zonealarm anymore. It has become too bloated, it uses too many resources and it scored "very poor" in recent firewall tests.
