They lack a message...people who want the war to end are pumping money into dems campaigns...it is not surprising that they are lagging behind.

While it's true that many Democrats are wealthy, that doesn't deter from the fact that the Democratic party is geared towards serving the poor & middle income citizens, while the Republican party is geared to serve the special interest groups, large corporations & the wealthy. Take as an example two of the wealthiest democrats in the USA: Bill Gates & Warren Buffett. Their contributions and endowments to the poor & the needy are unprecedented in these modern times. Can you name two of today's republicans that have matched their generosity? It's the philosophy we are talking about.

Excuse me while I recover from laughing at Lettie D's post above me. She really believes that the Democrats support the poor and they don't take money from the wealthy and large corporations! I'm sure Clinton and Obama are raising the millions they have from all those $2000 donations.
There are more Democrat millionaires in Congress than there are Republicans. Bet you didn't know that.
The Democrat policies of welfare and other handouts have done nothing to help poverty in this country. Around 66% of our budget are theses type of entitlements. that is growing every year and will never reverse. All these social programs have done is get people hooked on them. Yeah, Bush hasn't helped. But the problem was way out of control long before he was President.

In my experience (and I've been around for a while) when the GOP party is in control, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and the class gap widens. It is common knowledge that they represent "big business". Just look at the tax cuts for them for instance. Democrats throughout American history have always been known as the common man's party. That's just the way it's always been. Obama of the Democrat party won't even accept campaign donations from lobbyists or special interest groups. More candidates in both parties need to practice this and then they wouldn't be beholding to these people.

hmmm, "wealthy candidates who can spend large sums..." here's something interesting. the three wealthiest congresspersons are dems. even i was surprised.
1. herb kohl (D-Wis)
2. jane harman (D-Cal)
3. john kerry (D-Mass)
how can any of these people, dem or repub, truely represent the average american? short answer is they cannot. their attention has been and will be directed towards their portfolio.
edit: this just in, by some calculations john kerry would be in first place with $163,626,399, compared to herb kohl's $111,015,016, if it matters.

Are you saying that the Democrats who are running are just average citizens and not wealthy and don't have wealthy backers. Both parties are incapable of representing the average American because they don't have a clue as to what it is like to be just the average citizen.

No, they cannot represent average Americans. They can't even relate to us, and I imagine that most of them think they are far superior to any of us. The idea that money can make anyone superior is a ludicrous and immoral belief, but many people seem to embrace that belief, even some poor people do, and that is very sad. *sm*

I really don't see either party representing the average American lately. They are representing special interest groups.

The GOP has never represented the average American. They've successfully pandered to them and have gotten them to vote against their own best interests, but have never represented them.

I don't think that Hillary, Obama, Edwards or any other candidate represents me.
If you think Dems can represent the average American, you are buying into their smoke and mirrors act. They're not "average Americans". They are wealthy lawyers, and professional politicians.
