I work nights, weekends and days, 12 hour shifts 48 hours+ per week. Im just off many days during the week.

I already help with the house work and we have a lady come in and clean regularly. I also do the grocery shopping. I have a total of around 14 days off each month. That gives me a great deal of free time on weekdays. i like the volunteer ideas and the writing. Problem with working shift work, while you are off, everyone you know is working.

My hubby is home during the day sometimes. He writes books or does housework. He's published 3 books in the past 7 years, just writing for a couple of hours in the morning.

G'day!

I am not sure what you do for a real job, but if you are bored, and you have a bit of space in the house, have you thought about the world's greatest hobby, model trains???

It is a hobby that teaches you about many skills, and your wife and son can learn as well. Some of the skills that you could well learn from this hobby are:

Research. Sit down and think about what you want to model, what era, what location. When you have worked that out, start doing research on that area, learn about it and what made that area good.

Construction skills. To put a layout together, you need to be able to work with either wood or metal. Make you layout so that it can be easily pulled apart and reassembled. A change of address is never far away...

Wiring. As model trains work on track supplied electricity, you need to wire the layout to take electricity. You can also wire the points and do signalling if you feel inclined.

Repairs and maintenance of the locomotives and wagons. To keep your fleet running smoothly, you have to keep the maintenance up to them. Part of this is the couplers, the wheels and the motors. Doing repairs on the layout is also an item that needs to be done as well.

Buildings and scenery. Buildings and scenery can be purchased or scratchbuilt, depending on your level of patience. You can also make your own trees, lawns, roads and a host of other scenes.

I hope that this gives you some ideas for something to do while you are at home.

Ding.

Try coin collecting. It doesn't have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. A box of pennies is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of quarters or half dollars are $500. You don't have to buy the whole box. The bank can pull out whatever amount you like.

Once you get a box, you can go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). You can pick up a coin album and try to fill all the holes (get one for each year) or just search for interesting ones.

The coins that you don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don't search the same coins over and over). Everything you find will have been obtained at face value. You'd be surprised what people have found. Check out these links to see:

Also check your change for interesting finds.

Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, coins with the "S" mintmark - it could be a proof coin etc. There's always the chance that you could find a real treasure!

It's also helpful to buy a red book. It can help you price your coins and will answer many of the questions you may have.

OR IF THAT'S NOT FOR YOU...

Ask at the Volunteer Center if they have a thing you can do in your skills for an Hour or Two Hours a week

Start small and add hours if you find that helping other people is satisfying your need for things to do. This can be Rest and Recreation for you.

Take a course in something to make with your hands if you have a desk job or in accounting or writing if you have a physical job.

First you could help your wife with household chores, cleaning and washing dishes and clothes. Something that would give you great gratification would be to check around your neighborhood, churches and senior centers and see if there are any elderly or handicap people that really need help and cannot afford it or are ashamed to ask. You would be surprised at how many are out there.

Take a walk outside, bundle up if it's cold. I've been doing that everyday lately by myself, it's so great and relaxing, and puts me in a good mood when I get back home.

Or you could put up the Christmas tree for you family :O)

I like to sit in a quiet place and read the Bible. I learn a lot.

Have fun!
