BEFORE I put my Christmas Lights away (after the season), I make sure to clean the light string, lay it out on the ground, and then (especially for those net lights) gather them up carefully, and place each string in its own separate 1 gallon baggie (or ... in the case of strings -- on its own reel). That way, they are NOT tangled when I go to take them out for the next Christmas Season ... and it is just a matter of placing them out and plugging them in!

get pieces of card board and wrap your lights around the board and they will be good to go.. when they get tangled it messed up the wiring and that scares me like there will be a fire!
after you wrap lights around the cardboard, place then in between the christmas skirt or an old pillow case and that will keep them nice and tidy!

They sell plastic things to wrap the lights around, and hold them in place.

just like a hoes you could wrap them up at that circular thing you get at home depot and if you keep that routine going then you shouldn't have to unwrap them again
