Sometimes keeping quiet is the best answer.
People hear better with their hearts anyway.
And people aint stupid, no need to spell anything out.
Or perhaps they are a bit slow and you'd just be wasting your time talking about it.
Also, for the sake of peace in some cases.
Another reason, I could be in denial about the situation.
Perhaps even running away.
Or I need to think about it more... and come back later.

Sometimes you need time to back off and rethink before you answer, or time to cool off before you say something you'll regret later, other times you can start a conversation but then a look, a touch, a smile is enough to convey your feelings without words.
Sometimes people ask to know things that they may feel are a burning issue but if you tell them what they want to know it could scar them forever. If you give time the advantage, often, they will come to realize they truly did not need those answers either.
When my marriage ended, I felt I needed desperately to know the why of it all, why did he cheat, how long had he been seeing her behind my back. Closure I suppose.
He chose to leave all those things unsaid though, unanswered.
Years later I realized they were unimportant in the big picture, and the truth probably would have hurt me very deeply.
The bottom line was that I am much happier now than I was with him anyhow.

Sometimes it's just not appropriate, and in my job (US Army) shooting off at the mouth can get you in big trouble. I also sometimes keep things unsaid because the way I want to say them isn't right, and I need time to think of a better way to express what I'm feeling or thinking.

I try NOT to leave things unsaid (and I don't mean nasty or hurtful parting shots - that's not my thing) but I choose my words very carefully. I never mind having to explain myself and I like to have explanations in return. I know the term "closure" has become a cliché but, by any other name, represents the same necessary satisfaction that resolves a situation.

***Some things are just apparent to everybody, but stating them out loud is hurtful. Examples:
- "You are fat" (not really you, charmz, but a make-believe person.)
- "Grandma is probably going to die within five years."
-"Hey, I remember you, you're that guy who got stood up at his wedding. Man, you must've felt like s***!"
***Some tidbits of common knowledge should be left unsaid, but people tend to share their advice anyway, as though the person they're speaking to doesn't know already:
- "Y'know, smoking bad for you. You should stop."
- "You really need to change your diet and exercise more."

Because sometimes words can be irretrievable. Like the saying goes, sticks and stones can break your bones, but words cause permanent damage.
