As the saying goes no man is an island
While the US should always strive to do what is morally right. (something we are straying very far from in invading Iraq and torturing people) and not care if the world agrees when we are the moral high plane. We should also never forget that we cannot exist alone in the world and therefore need to take others into account
I am often curious as to why we do not expect out country to behave the same way as we would expect a person. If an individual went though life never caring at all what others think of them we would be appalled, so why would the same not apply to a nation

Yes we should care. Not just Americans though. Everyone should care if their Government is giving their nation a bad name overseas.
You can't hate an entire country because of their current administrations foreign policy.
Ordinary people are ordinary people the whole world over!

I can only speak for myself but... yes.
I come here and read some of the insults directed at Americans and I have to wonder just what in the hell we did to deserve it? They may not like Bush or that we are in Iraq, but do you hate an entire nation of 300 million people for that? It's no different than judging people by their skin color or stereotyping them for any other reason.

Of course. But it is OK to be unpopular on some issues. In the immortal words of 'Dr Phil', the measure as to whether we need to care is to ask ourselves "How's that working for ya?",
IF we are hated or reviled by huge portions of the world for the things we do for our own self interest, then we reap what we sow. If we are hated or reviled by small fry who did not get their way because of our actions or policy that make sense in the greater picture, we need not be to worried about it.
So its all about who dislikes us, why, and what problems does that cause us.

If we were not liked worldwide the rest of the world would not be coming here in record numbers. So many people are trying to get in they are willing to break our laws to do it.

uuuh yeah! We depend on the businesses they offer and vise versa. People complain about gas prices alone but if we really piss them off and they decide not to sell us oil we'll have to go into our reserves which is going to cost so much more we'll be forced to donate cars to museums and ride bikes and horses all over again. Thats just oil....we depend yet on so much more..food would be next.

if we want the inspectors at foreign airports and sea ports to be on the look-out for potential terrorists boarding ships and planes headed for the USA, and tell us about them, then YES, we should care very much
otherwise, the inspectors might look the other way or forget to mention it
