Each workplace has a "firewall". It acts as a protective shield between your companies Intranet and the public Internet. Whoever administers that firewall is the one who determines what sites you can go and which you can not. So it is going to be different for every company. One company may restrict Facebook, another may not.

A "proxy" is a computer which stands in between you and the public Internet, takes your request for sties, passes them on, and returns the results to you. Anytime you are on the Internet, you are using a "proxy". Usually one set u by your ISP.

To get around firewalls, so people will go out to "public" proxy servers. Those servers will take a request for a page that would be other restricted, sent it and return the results. This allows you to get to sites that would otherwise be banned from your workplace, school, etc.

However, if the company has a written policy banning the use of public proxy servers (and 99.9% of companies do), they have the right to terminate your employment if you are caught doing it. (And as a system admin for a large company, I can assure you that it is really easy to spot when someone does it.)

Hope that answers your questions.

A proxy is a server that is the gateway between an internal network and the internet. It controls all traffic in and out. Work can most definately block access to certain sites (most do).
How do they do this? Its a simple administrative task that every IT Admin should be able to do with their eyes closed.
As to why your friends say they cant, and you say you can... I have no idea, could be any number of reasons

Also you can get the latest proxies at the Freedom Network:

Also proxies from the Freedom Network are some of the rare proxies on the net that let you comment, send messages, post bulletins, and view all pages of peoples pages on myspace.

Enjoy, and tell others so they can enjoy too.
