I assume that this is a struggle because its personal. A palliative care team provides care that reduces the symptoms of whatever the person is struggling with health care wise. It doesn't necessarily mean the person will die. If the person is having chemotherapy the palliative care team will help with nausea and other symptoms. Palliative care could help surgery patients with pain and positioning. If the person is in a hospice situation the palliative care team will help with positioning, dry mouth, temperature regulation, etc. to ease the discomfort of the patient. It is a wonderful world we live in when we have people who dedicate their careers to helping people get through these small but very significant things and providing education for others. If I were you I would set up a meeting with a member of the care unit and the twelve year old. These people are trained to educate and give care and they will help you a lot.

Im with everyone else - honesty is best. Im assuming this is in relation to someone they know. There are lots of books available now to help speak with children of all ages about illness and death - maybe using one of these would put palliative care in context and act as a tool for you to start the conversation. Amazon has a whole list of them. Or lmaybe ook on some of the hospice sites, as many of these specialise in working with children coming to terms with terminally ill relatives.

12 y/o understand more than you think just say the truth
X is in alot of pain. They are sick and aren't going to get better. Palliative care is going to make them comfortable and help them until they die.

Just tell the truth - it's a hospital or hospice unit where people who are not going to live much longer are made as comfortable and pain free as possible.

lol I don't even know what that is and i'm 18..
****.... *googles* - ok.. so it's just a place where they ease the pain of suffering people who are going to die?

just tell him that. or simply say - "it's a place where they try to comfort suffering people."

who's in there? a close friend or family member..? I could understand why that would be hard.

tell the little boy/girl that you love them and your going somewhere to rest, tell them that you are very ill and that no matter what happens you will always love them and be there for them. If they guess the worse tell them its true at the age of 12 they should be able to understand.

I had to answer that question 2 years ago when my mother was in her final stages with pancreatic cancer. I found that honesty was the best approach.

Best wishes to you and your child.
