If you watch BET or any other african american show. Or if you watch any show that Mo'Nique stars and also if you just sit around and watch African American people, they seem to embrace obesity more than any other race. Why is that?

Not trying to make race an issue. Just stating an obvious fact, if you watch the shows and observe black people in action, this is what is going on. dont try to ignore the facts.

Id Like to give My Personal Opinion On this.Reason i feel I'm qualified is being a biracial woman Sicilian and black being now 5'8 210 lbs ,2006 160lbs,2005 135lbs.I think i can give it a guess. I don't think its so much that its so much that its "African American Community's" embrace .I more think that the White American discriminate.other culture also "EXCEPT" larger body images also for instance being Sicilian Eating is part Of The culture.Having round Lil Grandmothers is normal to Us . Look at the Soprano's who really isn't large.the Russian culture again larger woman and men along with the Hispanic Mexican and German Culture.I cant remember being raised with anything stressed about Body image being taught that that would define who or what we are or would become. if you look at the eating disorder statistics of female teenagers you would be surprised at the comparison of race.I'm not bashing one race or another. just giving my personal opinion.

hi there,

I think that your question is a very good one, and it is one that I often think about myself. Although I am African American, I do not support being obese or overweight. In fact, I am personally vehemently against it. This is partially due to the fact that I was obese at one point in my life (and no longer am, wohooooooo!), and I lost the weight (46 pounds, to be exact!) through strict diet and exercise. Also, being in medical school has truly opened up my eyes to all of the future health problems that I could possibly face as a woman if I continued to eat poorly and keep on all that unnecessary weight..

Interestingly, when I talk to both my mother and my sister about the important issues of health and obesity, they brush my concerns aside, and say that I am "self-hating."

The African American community, IMHO, is very aware of all of the problems associated with obesity (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, (breast) cancer, stroke, atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure or other forms of heart disease, etc).

However, I think that we are less inclined to take a strong stand against obesity because of self-image. For over four centuries, we have struggled to have a sense of collective self,....a sense of importance, a sense of beauty, a sense of acknowlegement. By embracing being overweight, we are stating (in general) that we like who we are, that we are proud of the fact that we haven't bought into the (white) American ideal that being thin is "better," per se.

I think that this ideology has done a lot for our community, in general, by giving us a positive self-image. HOWEVER, I believe that we are sacrificing health and future longevity for the sake of proving a futile societal point.

Interestingly, obesity among African Americans was never an issue (in fact, it was more of the exception, than the rule) until about the past 20 years, or so...It definitely is something to think about..

Just my opinion..

(Btw, I don't think that your question is "racist" in any way..I believe that it is a valid question).

A couple things. This is only my opinion from conversations I've had with black friends, but as a rule, most black men want some women with meat on their bones. I don't mean grotesquely obese, but they want someone solid. Secondly, I think it has a lot to do with diet (especially in the south where soul food/country cooking are popular).

I also question your real reason for this question. God said there is someone for everyone and I personally don't like a mate that looks like a stick figure. I feel so sorry for those models because if they ever fall off that stage they're going to break something.

We don't embrace and support obesity. We just don't fear overweight people as much as some people do.
