I have just had my Ford Focus 1.8 petrol serviced at a Ford dealer and just checked my oil level after standing overnight and it is about 1/4 inch above the maximum mark on the dipstick. I checked it again after a few minutes driving and the level was obviously lower because the engine was hot, but something that concerns me is that I noticed a few bubbles in the oil. I am now thinking that the crankshaft may have whipped up the oil, or is this just normal to have some bubbles in the oil (perhaps more noticeable because the oil is very new ) ?

The amount of oil you're describing as overfill is probably not anything to be concerned about. The bubbles in the oil can be caused by many many things, the effect of "whipping" you're referring to would only occur if it was overfilled by a quart or maybe more.

A normal reading when the engine is warm and one that is a bit higher when cold is perfectly normal. If you're truly concerned about it and want to maintain peace of mind then check it a few more times at both cold and warm levels. If you start to see many many tiny bubbles in a froth like form then you should be concerned.

Hope this helps!

Not to ask a stupid question, but was the engine running when you checked it? Oil level will appear more than what it is while the engine is running. The bubbles you speak of are normal especially with new oil because the viscocity of the oil is at best when new and is thicker than old oil, giving old oil a "liquid/watery" appearence.

Sounds fine. If the oil was over the crankshaft you would have oil leaking from every orifice. ¼ inch high is well within the headroom needed for the oil to slosh about when cornering. I'd do something if it was much over ½ inch too high

Don't worry about it the oil will bubble a little during its normal life. All motor oils have inhibitors that will minimise the amount of foam produced.

Too much oil is as bad as less oil in your engine. The oil pump will be working harder, and a possibility that the oil has too much pressure and getting into the combustion chamber.
