I think that the conquistador scenes were obviously the wife's book but I think after she died, Jackman's character researched the bark of the tree, planted it on her grave, researched immortality, became immortal, ripped the tree out of the ground that was above her grave, and shot off in space toward the nebula. As he neared the nebula, he figured out the ending for her book.

Some reviews said it was allegorical or he was insane. The view presented above makes more sense. Either way, it is an amazing movie!

Opinions?

As I interpreted the movie, Izi repeatedly told Jackman to ''finish it" which in some parts I thought meant he had to finish her book because she asked him too the night before she died. From what I got, he died and was on his way to Xibalba (which, as you remember was where the dead souls go to be reborn) but couldn't go because he had unfinished business, (which was her book) so when he finally finished it, he was reborn. While he was bald he was remembering his life when he was alive. The tree, represented (again my personal opinion) Izi's immortal life. (which in nature almost everything is immortal) Remember as he ate pieces of the tree, he remembered his life while he was alive. Therefore, she helped him through his unfinished business. As he was reborn, he lived forever with Izi in heaven. And at the very end, when he planted the seed over her grave, she would (her spirit) grow into the tree. (When she said before in the hospital about Moses Morales and his father's spirit growing into the tree.) So she would live forever as a tree. I know this doesn't make sense but neither do I. ha ha. Anyway I agree with you, it really was an excellent ,touching, and moving movie.

As I thought I understood it, he was at the end of time as the tree was the only thing left and he was waiting for rebirth as he achieved immorality he, and his dead wife merged with the tree and the universe was reborn. But I don't remember, haven't seen the movie in a very long time. The planting of the seed on her grave was a loopback from after the tree was reborn in order to give birth to the tree to begin with.

That actually makes less sense than the reviews saying it's allegorical or that Jackman was insane. He just jumped up holding a tree, and shot off into space, screaming "Screw Gravity!"? No, I think not.

it wasn't what I thought it would b and I was disappointed in the whole movie. it was all over the place and a bit slow. it drove me nuts. Was he a scientist trippin on some good drugs or just dilutional from the fact that his wife was dying and eventually did and this so called miracle tree bark didn't work to fix her illness ?? that was his bad movie.

I believe well known actors/actress' make at least one horrible movie to help someone out in the industry. like a pro-bono kinda thing. This was Hugh Jackman's
Mel Gibbson's was The Million Dollar Motel/Hotel.. that sucked big time.
