Oh goodness me, let's get this right. Hospitals don't LET you do things. Full stop. You're an adult. You do what you want to do and it is none of their business!
Of course I don't advocate breaking the law and it is never advisable to take a baby in a car without a properly fitted car seat. But I don't see anything wrong with going home on public transport. I had my baby at home and I don't drive, so I was on public transport when she was two days old. How else was I meant to get about? Of course I had her snuggled close to me, safe in her sling. I wouldn't recommend a pushchair or stroller for a newborn, anyway.
I think a lot of hospitals do run a car seat program where they will lend you one or have the number of a taxi service that has infant carseats issued to their cars. Ask your midwife in advance if you think it will be a problem. But there's no reason you need a carseat if you will transport your baby on foot and public transport.
This mindset of hospitals and doctors 'letting' people do things drives me nuts! You're a reasonable adult doing your own research. If you feel capable of finding your own way home then that is what you should do. Babies have to be in public spaces - buses, shops, trains. It's not something you can avoid, so don't worry about it. There is such a thing as being over-cautious!

Most hospitals have a rule that you MUST have a carseat to take your baby home, even if you live right down the street and can walk home! The hospital staff will escort you to the door, then their responsibility ends.
Later on, you can take your child on the bus in a stroller. I regularly do with mine. However, I have wondered about his safety in the event of a crash. Buses don't have seat belts for the adult passengers either, so if they crash, everyone gets thrown around a lot. I guess they have crashes a lot more rarely because the drivers are trained to a higher standard, and buses are big so they are easier for others to see!

the hospital wont let you leave i dont think with out a car seat, both hospitals i dealt with needed to check and make sure baby was all secure properly before leaving. Even though you dont drive, it would be best to invest in a car seat simply because the baby will need it. (traveling with a friend, or family etc) As far as bus's, i dont think they require a car seat only because its not even required we wear a seat belt and most people hold their kids or have them in a stroller. Id invest in a carseat and have someone pick you up from the hospital and cart you around for a little while.

No they the hospital will not let you take your baby home on a bus or on any transport with out a car seat, you will have to get a friend or relitive to take or a taxi, if you dont have a car seat the hospital will lend you one, but they will refuse to let baby go home without knowing that it is going to get there safely, if you dont have money for a taxi expalin to the hospital and they may be able to help you with transport aswell....good luck!

aha, that's clearer! thank you. sorry if i upset you, you would not believe some silly people that do put their baby's in danger, you obviously are not like that.
i wonder if the midwife could tell you about any voluntary patient transport system from your hospital. this way you will be driven home in comfort and borrow a car seat. I'm sure your not the 1st to be in this situation. please don't get home by bus etc, it will be really uncomfortable and you could hemorrhage. all the best and i hope you get it sorted, i also hope mother nature gives you a quick and easy labour!xxx

They will not allow a newborn to be taken home on public transportation and quite frankly why would you subject the baby to that? Newbies are highly suseptible to infections, colds and the like...especially before they hit 2 months of age becuase they have not had their immunizations.....so please take a taxi home...I mean its not like u have a choice....the nurses walk you down or wheelcair you down and put the baby in the car for you lol!

I believe they do as far as bringing them into the hospital to be seen but I am sure you can call the labor and delivery department of the hospital and ask.Its a good question don't worry about them thinking otherwise trust me they are asked every day how to do simple parenting things for first tme parents.

I'm not sure they will let you take your baby home on the bus!! I think you would be much more comfortable getting a taxi or asking a family member or friend to pick you up.
You are going to be very sore and it wont be fun on a bus.
The best thing to do is to ask your midwife and explain your situation to her!!

They will not let you leave the hospital with your baby unless you are getting in a car with a car seat. you have to order a cab or get someone to pick you up

Even if you took baby home in a taxi you would still need a car seat for him/her.
