.....just because she was found to have been in a car with a male? Do you agree this is civilised or uncivilised?

My definition of civilised agrees with the Cambridge Dictionary:

Civilised - describes a society or country that has a highly developed system of government, culture and way of life and that treats the people who live there fairly.

"I think we need to fix thing's in our own country before involving our selfs in others"

Yeah we really need to stop whipiing our women in the UK when they get into a car with a man.

it's disgusting.

Shiah Muslims have the strictest laws and are very set in their beliefs. they fuel up young men with talk of martyrdom and eternal love with Allah.
they treat their OWN women as sh*it. they are irrelevant in their own culture and forced to live in the most basic, barbaric existence, in my opinion, on the planet.

what that poor woman went through was hell. to be raped by seven men, then to have to submit to 200 lashes just because she was with a male student FRIEND (who was also attacked) is horrific. i won't be surprised if she is shunned by her family or even worse.

and these are the radicals that want to bring Muslim law to the UK??????

oh and before I'm slatted, by some for my views.....i have worked in a women's refuge for Muslim women in hiding. the stories i could tell you would turn your stomach. the most EVIL acts carried out by men to their OWN wives in the name of religion.

gamar.......RESEARCH???????

what the hell has that got to with it. it's the 21st century. instead of looking in books at statistics and quotes, (which have all be written by men or women under the influence of men) try spending time with the actual suffers of these crimes.
to say she deserved it is SICK.

It's wrong if that's what you mean. 'Civilised' is a word with just too many pejorative nuances. The US is 'civilised' but tortures its enemies, most African peoples were better off before colonial rule 'civilised' them - although one could find female mutilation amongst the Masai for example. It's complex and shouldn't be over-simplified. Saudi Arabia is a country with an appalling human rights record, facilitated by 'Western' money. Lashings are neither effective punishment nor useful deterrent, the justice system weighted unfairly against certain groups, where it operates at all.

Hmmm... "uncivilized."
No.
Barbaric.

"Wed Nov 21, 9:19 AM ET
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The Saudi judiciary on Tuesday defended a court verdict that sentenced a 19-year-old victim of a gang rape to six months in jail and 200 lashes because she was with an unrelated male when they were attacked.

The Shiite Muslim woman had initially been sentenced to 90 lashes after being convicted of violating Saudi Arabia's rigid Islamic law requiring segregation of the sexes.

But in considering her appeal of the verdict, the Saudi General Court increased the punishment. It also roughly doubled prison sentences for the seven men convicted of raping the woman, Saudi news media said last week."

This again highlights some of the poor human and civil rights in Saudi Arabia. But because of money and oil the Saudi's have a lot of power over the west particularly the US so nothing will be done about this sort of thing.

Uncivilised of course!

Saudi Arabia has always been pretty backward in every sense...women are also banned from driving, voting, mixing with men, dancing, listening to western music etc etc.

And nothing beneficial to mankind has ever come out of the Arabian peninsula or the Arab world.

This sort of thing is all too common in the Islamic world im afraid! Its NOT just confined to Saudi....these things happen in Iran, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Algeria and more recently in Iraq also.

By these things i mean, blaming a woman if she is raped, forcing women to cover up, discouraging them from getting jobs or being educated, Honour Killings, stoning, lashing and executiing for adultery, having sex outside marriage, prostitution, and sometimes just for dancing, smoking, wearing western clothes etc etc.

Well, these guys are a bunch of perverts. They probably get off on giving her 200 lashes. We used to be like this in west with the inquisition where women would have their breasts torn off in the name of religion. Ain't mankind ( and I mean the man bit ) just great ?

Thats par for the norm over there, they have what they call the religous police, who are unsanctioned, unelected, and above any law or government, but who go around kidnapping, raping, torturing and even hanging women for minor 'crimes' like this, or showing her face, etc.

The entire culture is backward.

For any culture it is brutal treatment meted out by men towards women. Totally wrong.
However, it does not stop the Western world doing business with them. I wonder why? So does that mean it is being condoned or ignored. So much for Human rights!

Why are people bringing Kamran into this? Are they unable to construct an answer without lumping all Muslims together as one? Kamran as far as I am aware is NOT a shiite Muslim and does not come from Saudi Arabia, he is a British born Muslim and has nothing to do with this news story.
