I'd probably say television. It had a massive impact by 1958.

My birthday! jk. i think of that they may be the events that make profound differences interior the international. regrettably, they are often wars and different undesirable stuff. i does no longer say events, some have been (or are) gradual technique that made differences. First international conflict, 2d international conflict, little question approximately it. the international continues to be feeling the end results of the 2d. The introduction of Israel as a rustic, the full technique. The invasion, the conflict, and so forth. The advance of socialism. we are able to pay dearly for it in the time of this century. The advance of the companies. Tightly concerning the previous one. The transistor, electronics often. The medical commercial complicated. verbal replace revolution. i will think of lots like those, i will sum all of them up by using fact the techno-commercial revolution. i'm specific some might bear in mind the guy on the moon and others like that. yet those events did no longer make profound differences interior the international. they are substantial nonetheless, yet greater a effect of the events that made the variations.

I have keyed in numerous events only to change my mind and delete.
Every decade had some important event. Only beginnings, to which there has never been an ending. If this were a decade question I would pick the 1960's I just checked this site http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/decade60.html
I haven't looked at any answers yet, some will pick a war, some will pick a more personal answer. and give it has the most important. So many will be right as they choose the event that affected themselves as Americans.
I am going to go with the introduction of The Theory of Evolution
Don't really want to get into why.
It will be obvious to the the people that need to see or just look it up
The Theory of Relativity also comes to mind.

The First World War is undoubtedly the most important event of the 20th century. Prior to 1917, the Americans were firmly isolationists and basically left the rest of the world to its own devices. When they entered the war, effectively turning the tide against the Germans, it marked the entry onto the world stage of a major (and I mean MAJOR) powerhouse.
Since then, American foreign policy has affected just about every nation on earth, whereas beforehand they were just another North American nation. Nobody has since come even close to matching the influence of the Americans on a global level, and they have been the Imperial successor to the British ever since.

I'd say the Vietnam War.
- It made protesting the government popular.
- It saw the first use of war being shown live to the public.
- Vietnam is responsible for many Americans Vets being turned on to marijuana and them bringing it back to America were they turned on other Americans. Many Americans were turned on to drugs as a direct result of Vietnam.
- It effected much of the American music in the 60's and 70's. We're still listening to those songs today.
- It saw the first use of the media and public pressure forcing the government to change their policy.
- It saw the first case of the government troops firing and killing American student protesters on a college campus.
- Vietnam changed the way most Americans feel about their government.
- Vietnam also changed world opinion of America.
Edit
I don't believe mary jane was mainstream in America until 1966-67 ( about the time troops started returning, and the hippie movement went cross-country)and after WW1 and WW2, America was popular and liked world-wide, Vietnam changed that.

How about the Great Depression? It overthrew the society, brought the middle classes to bottom, made social measures popular and changed the public mentality towards government and economy for decades.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we are still the only member of the club...
I think we also lost a big chunk of our soul when Kennedy was assassinated... I remember being a boy in Europe and will never forget the sea of flowers and an ocean of lit candles literally surrounding US Embassy, placed there by people who could barely afford food, living in a communist ruled country. It continued for days...
