When someone asks something of the sort you would to a friend around the house first thing of a morning, that's chatty. Chat questions have no lasting reference value. They are not questions that anyone would look for a year from now. Examples:
Who wants to wish me happy birthday today?
Help me make this the longest thread in Answers history?
Is Jonas cute or what?
Look at my photo (link) - am I handsome/cute?
How's the weather today?
Why is Ginger trolling here under three names?
Who thinks Answers s****?
What time does Oprah come on this afternoon?
McDonalds or Hardees?
Is Judas Rabbi a fraud or what?
Who thinks top contributor is a fake thing here?
What would you say to the avatar above you, if you could?

I've seen every one of these, most several times.

Examples of non chat questions with reference value:
How long did Lincoln live after being shot?
What is the best speed to burn a CD at - 2X or 16X?
Why did The Crusades start?
How old was Beethoven when he lost his hearing, and what happened?
Why were the Apocryphal Books of the Bible removed by Protestants and retained by Catholics?
Can a metric tool kit be 100% compatible with hardware from the US?
What's the smallest United States state in population?
What's gerrymandering?
Does gender determine color preferences?

You can see from these examples why few people ask or answer them here. They sound like homework questions, and some may be. But more, I think most Answers users are 12-18 years old, and coming here to discuss homework-flavored questions is the last thing on their mind. They come to play. And for that same reason, you won't find many serious takers on questions like this. You'll see other violation answers like "idk", "cuz he did" and other really poor quality answers that reveal the author's age.

Here is what Yahoo! says:

"Yahoo! Answers is a question-and-answer community of people sharing knowledge. We provide a couple of different ways for members to connect with one another, including email, instant message, and a comments area, so chatting in questions and answers is not allowed. When people use Answers to chat with each other, it lowers the quality of the site and inhibits knowledge-sharing.

Here are a few examples of what we consider chatting:

* How (are you, old are you, was your day, is everyone today)?
* What are you/What am I (doing, thinking of, wearing, etc.)?
* Guess my/Can you guess my/What's your (name, age, sex, weight, birthday, location, etc.)?

We also consider questions that call out other users by name to be chatting. If the intent is to ask a follow-up question in response to someone else’s question and that person is not available via email or IM, post a new question that’s open to everyone in the community to answer – there might be someone else who’s better equipped to answer it."

it is a question that's asked many times back, by using fact there are distinctive "gray" factors in touch. in my opinion, i do no longer see the "harm" in a sprint CHAT now and then... nor even in relatively a rant right here and there. yet Y!A can get exceedingly "sticky" with protecting their policies. Chatty questions: So what's "chatty" in accordance to YA? at times, the version between an opinion-searching for Q and a chatty one may be diffused. an difficulty-free attempt to tell what's chatty is to ask your self "is that this question searching for awareness-worth solutions?" If the respond is not any, it is greater suitable to bypass it through. nevertheless doubtful? ask your self "might the different guy or woman (different than for the Asker and Answerer) care one bit approximately this techniques?" If the respond is not any, it is a chatty question. you will discover some stable examples interior the valid help web site (already stated through a few) or interior the area on Abuse comments and violations (see 2d link under). Have a YAHOO Day!
