Obviously, some of these people never used one, because there IS such a thing as a "bastard file". It's used a lot in draw filing.

Here's something I found on the Net about it:

"Bastard refers to the tooth cut. I think it might have started as an
illegitimate modification of the parallel cuts of a mill file to a cross
hatch cut... a bastard. In use, it removes material faster, but leaves a
rougher finish, which would seem to be appropriate to the name."

Of course, it could've been named by someone who asked"Now where did I leave that bastard!"

There's also a certain cut with a saw called a bastard cut in wood craft and I think that means a rough cut from what my teacher said so I expect a bastard file has big teeth and I think the bastard part must have something to do with it being rough because in tech are teacher uses it alot instead of the word rough but I don't know who named it.

The word "bastard" refers to the coarseness of the file. It means an intermediate or medium coarseness. I have no idea who chose to use the word in that fashion and I doubt anyone else does either.

Sorry, not in the U.K., but '10" mill bastard' is a pretty standard tool. Try a REAL hardware outfit.

rumour has it, he was in the patent office with his invention and he couldnt find it in his brief case, and when he said in a fit of temper ''i cant find the bastard file, hang on a minite'' the man in the patent office wrote it down on the form as the name of the object
