If a man is driving at the rate of 60kph and he accelerates, it means he increases his driving speed to 61kph or higher. This can be done by either decreasing the time or increasing the distance.

Whenever we talk about "acceleration" almost everyone will associate it with increase in speed. But acceleration does not necessarily have to mean increase in speed. Acceleration is defined as the change in VELOCITY per unit time. Take note that VELOCITY IS DIFFERENT FROM SPEED. Velocity is a vector quantity whereas speed is a scalar quantity. This means velocity is described not only by magnitude but also by direction. Therefore, a change in velocity, which is acceleration, could mean any of the following:
a) increase in speed
b) decrease in speed
c) increase or decrease in speed AND change in
direction
Usually the unit of acceleration under the System International is meter per second per second or meter per second square (m/s^2) and its direction being the same as that of the net force that causes acceleration.

In order for a car(a moving mass) to increase its velocity it is necessary to increase power.
Without a power increase there is no increase of average velocity.
If 1ton car moves a speed of 16.6 meters per secs it acquired 277thousand joules of energy in one second.
If the car was to accelerate to a speed by 10 km/hour it would need 379 thousand joules of energy in one second. Hence to accelerate the car speed by 10 km/h it would cost an additional power of101 thousand joules of Energy in one second.
Therefore a change in power means a change in speed and acceleration.
