It is a single oven which has the grill element attached at the top and I think this is what is causing the smoke. I've tried to clean it but its difficult as the grill element cannot be removed so I am not able to give the top of the oven a good clean. Do I need a new oven?

If I do buy a new oven what do I need to look out for? I think I'll go for a double oven but I need to make sure it fits - any advice?

Please understand that I have cleaned my oven thoroughly several times, but its not as simple as putting a cleaner on it and washing it off - I can't get to it to wash it off!! Which makes it smoke and smell more as the detergent burns. I have tried steaming the oven, but I just cant get to it to wipe it. I'm having it professionally cleaned next week to see if that solves things before I rush into buying a new oven.
Believe me if you were in my house when I have my oven on you would understand my frustrations - your eyes water and your chest tightens - its not nice!

Sounds like it just needs a good cleaning, especially if the smoke is coming from inside the oven. Are you sure the element can't be removed? You may try to find someone to help you remove the element and clean the upper surface. If the smoke is coming from the oven's wiring, it's time for a new oven.

Assuming the smoke is coming from the element/cooking area it is probably just fats and other stuff burning off. it is amazing how stubborn some of the fat and grease splatters are to get off it. I would try one of the no scrub oven cleaners to get the areas you can not get to.
However if the smoke is coming from the control areas or where the wiring is then yes it is time to get a new oven.

With your up date of possibly buying a new oven.
Obviously, the first two concerns are size and price.
Then it’s a matter of what options you want that will
make your style of baking and cooking easier.
For most people most any of the new standard oven
designs are sufficient since most of us do not get into
the hard core professional levels of cooking.
However, I would look at the energy efficiency ratings
on each of the ovens. If there are a couple of ovens you like
that are similar in price go for the more energy efficient oven (assuming there is a major difference in effency.)
Hope this helps,
take care and good luck.

If it's enough smoke to set off the fire alarm, you should be able to smell it just fine, so your visual impairment shouldn't be an issue. I would say you need to get it cleaned better, maybe get someone who can see better to come out and do it for you if it keeps going off. How old is your fire alarm? Have you had issues with it before? You could always try replacing the batteries on it. However, I really doubt that's the case...it's too big of a coincidence that it goes off when you use your oven. So like I said, try and get your oven cleaned better, maybe by someone else. Also, try and put the fire alarm near the kitchen, but maybe not IN the kitchen. Also, if you have a vent on a stove above the oven, you might try turning that on.

You don't need a new oven, just get some MR> Muscle oven cleaner and spray it on thick where you can't reach. Lleave it for half an hour then wash it off. The generation today are too quick to replce things when there is a problem with them instead of finding a way to solve it. Very wasteful indeed.

Good advice from the guy with the dodgy name(!) I would add, once you've got it clean in the way he suggests, that in future you refrain from using the grill for anything which might splash fat ( you could buy one of those 'mini oven/grills' for this), and cover roasting meat etc with foil to prevent splashes. If you can't get the grill element clean, you could have it replaced - which would be a bit cheaper than buying a new oven.

I have had two ovens in the past 8 years and they both did this. One did it from brand new - the other I inherited when I moved in. I have cleaned them but it doesn't help. If you find out what solves the problem I would be interested too.

You should be able to burn off the fat etc., just by turning the gill up to max until the element stops smoking. try this, if no joy, then a new element cost around £20, easy to fit. Cheaper than a new oven.

It needs a good cleaning/degreasing. You may want friend who is good at such things to take it apart for cleaning.
