It's all about the mood you want to present, with a home video camera, you lack options when it comes to lighting and sound. You'd definately need an external audio source, a bi-pod/tri-pod, and if you plan on shooting indoors you'll need an alternate light source to combat fluorescent lighting. The key to cheap-skate documentaries being a success is the editing, if it's the style you're going for, try for faster edits to detract from camera quality. Also, look around in stores for some non-copyrighted music to set the mood. Audio is the most important thing when shooting with any camera that costs less than $1,000.

As long as you have good sound to go with it, I don't see why not. The problem with 'home video' cameras is picking up great sound. Professional people have those boom microphones, but I think that you can investigate a 'blue tooth' type of device to pick up individual sounds from a distance (i.e., someone singing on a stage and you're in the balcony). Have fun!
