I plan on going home to America for the holidays, and therefore I need to get a re-entry permit so that I don't cancel my current visa. Does anyone have any experience with this?

2-7 days. and it says on this website that it cost
You are looking for a multiple or double-entry visa and they usually cost around 6,000 yen/$50

* a multiply or double entry visa allows you to go in and out of Japan without losing your current visa.

It's easy, you just have to take a number and wait in line. I think I waited about 25 minutes after I filled out all the paperwork.

It's while you wait. If you have more money than time, a judicial scrivener can do it on your behalf. A scrivener can make all your trips to immigration for you, as a matter of fact.

Everyone (in theory...) can get the re-entry permit while-you-wait. Apparently you can also do your fingerprint preregistration there too.
