In Desperate Housewives the AA boyfriend of Bree tells her son that he has had sex with many 'people'. And is undergoing therapy for being a sex maniac.
So the son asks, 'what do you mean people'.
And when Bree returns they are in her bed having sex.

but can be females too,
Some girls say "guys" to their female friends,
or people say guys to a group of people, including both genders..

Can be generalized to mean either but if you are breaking it down into guys or girls then it would mean males of course

Guys generally means males, you guys is usually a general group.
