Muslim man (Supervisor) states women must be "Beneath" him due to his Islamic beliefs. He states women must not look him in the eyes and must show total respect to him when they enter his office. Also they must have their heads covered to talk to him. He says it's his religious right. Can he get away with this in the USA?

Only if we let muslims bring their evil shariah law to America. We are in Iraq to fight against the belief system you see exhibited in the man you ask about. Here is a direct quote from the koran to show you where the muslim you ask about got his ideas: "Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. Surely God is high, supreme." (Dawood's version of the Koran, Quran, 4:34)

No, he can't. It's called the Constitution, and provides for women's rights. Funny how selective he is about that.

And he's twisting his own Islamic laws for his own benefit.

He's following Sharia principles, which clearly state that Muslims cannot enforce Sharia (those actions you described) on non-Muslims. So unless you signed an agreement that you would follow this when you were hired, or are Muslim, he is so totally wrong, AND breaking non-discrimination laws. I would talk to Human resources about this ASAP.

Look at it another way.... if he was Jewish, could he insist that only circumcized males that wear a yamulka could work in his office? No.

He has the rights to pursue his religion, ON HIS OWN TIME. But when it comes to the workplace, he has to abide by all labor laws on both the federal and state levels. And that includes not enforcing his beliefs on others.

I'm from Australia but I'd recommend you either contact whatever the equivalent of the Workplace Rights Department is or -if you think it advisable - contact a TV station and ask to speak to a reporter. They'd LOVE a story like that! On second thoughts, is there a workplace rights representative there or can you speak to his ( Muslim's)supervisor ? Maybe that's the way to do it. Either way, I think you'd find since he's not in a Muslim country, he can't force his "rights" on you. If you were in a Muslim country, you'd be "expected" to wear a veil ( more of a courtesy than a rule) but it goes both ways.

My grandfather used to work for the MTA in NYC. They had 2 guys from India. One guy was a lower position than the other at work, but under their caste system he was higher up than the other guy. He used to treat this guy (who was his boss) like dirt. He would even abuse the man's wife. So finally my grandfather and his buddies at the office got sick of it. They took him (the higher caste hindu bully) aside into an empty room...informed him he was in America now, and that BS over with. Then the informed him, that if they saw him acting that way again, they would kick the dog s#@% out of him.

That is how you handle that

NO. He has a responsibility to treat all employees according to the law and company policies/practices, whatever his personal beliefs. In the US, he cannot discriminate against anyone based on age, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc....

If this is happening in your office, I would recommend notifying human resources. Good Luck!

You should make complain to his boss.

In U.S., he is more in sexual harassment than his religious right. In fact, you can lawsuit the company for hiring him.

Religious right is for himself and he has no right to enforce his religion to other. Everyone is equal in status.

You also have your religious right as non-religious.

Universal Declaration Article 30 said, " Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein. "

Since he is a muslim, in fact he should be an extremist, you can use the search engine in Yahoo or Google to find the web-site of Homeland security and report him as a terrorist.

His religious rights pertain to his person and do not affect the rights of others. Protection against religious discrimination in the work place does not mean that others in the work place need to adopt or respect his religious practices - it only means that he can not be discriminated against because of his religion.

Any company who attempted to allow such demands would be opening themselves up to a sexual discrimination lawsuit because his actions would be discriminating against the women in his work place.

I am a muslim american arab.. I worked in USA as well as my home country SaudiArabia... This man should not act this way... As much as we covering women have to fight places like France where they ban the scarf, we dont need to fight men like him who demand it from someone elses faith..
As a muslim we know there is No compulsion in religion.. We cannot force our ideals on others.. Also if he is a good muslim like he claims, then he should remember who he is in the presence of women and lower his gaze and not stare.. He should check his own self-esteem in that case.. We as muslims have to abide by the rules and laws in the country we are in unless they deny us the right to practice our faith.. He is free to practice his beliefs, but not force it upon others.. That is totally against Islam.. Not to mention work place conduct there in USA.. Its harrassment and the female employees need to take him up on this.. ... its people like that who give Islam a bad name.. Please dont let this unknowledgable man (ignorant by dictionary terms) of the religion make you think less of us good muslims...

listen, Muslim women veil not for men. Women veil for God - or atleast should be. If this man doesn't mind a non Muslim woman looking at him in the eyes, he needs to stop being such a hypocrite.
