Firstly the United Kingdom is not synonymous with England. The Act of Union of 1707 created a Kingdom of Great Britain over which the King or Queen would be the Monarch and Head of State. Prior to this the King would have been of England and also Scotland separately. They were separate countries with two parliaments. After the Act of Union there was a combined parliament. In 1800 another Act of Union paved the way for the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. So actually the King at the time was the first King of the UK. It was George III.
The UK is now of Great Britain and Northern Ireland since partition of Ireland. The new name came into being in 1927 after partition had taken place 5 years before. This was in the time of George V.

King Canute,(994-1030) I think he was a Dane but nit sure about that bit. James 1 was not the first king at all and Mary queen of Scots was a cousin of our own queen who was the daughter of dear old murdering Henry..
