There is very little difference in today's US. Many of the Democrats are backed by big business as well. In theory, the democrats are for the people and more likely to provide better social and domestic programs (where does that money come from) and the republicans are for reduced spending (like the war?!?) .

There is a sketch from Beyond the Fringe in which a discussion about America is taking place and Peter Cook says, "They have the two party system over there. They have the Republican Party which is equivalent to our conservative party and they have the Democratic Party which is equivalent to .......... our conservative party."

Probably the best distinction is in today's news.
Former Senator Edwards (Democrat) is concerned about the disappearing middle class and wants to provide assistance to the workers.
Former Mayor Guiliani (Republican) is concerned about business not doing well in the current economy.
The focus is where you believe the best interests of the country reside. Democrats generally believe that if the people are better off, the society is better off. Republicans generally believe that if business is doing well, the country does well.
This is also reflected in their financial support. GENERALLY, the Republicans get most of their financial support from business, while Democrats get most of their financial support from workers and labor unions.

Dems more liberal, less dependent on and responsive to the rich. They are still too close, with the exception of some. Kucinich, Obama

they are both opposite wings of the same bird of prey
they are both opposite sides of the same coin
they are OPPO-SAMES
republicrats = demoplicans
one gets into power then screws up, allowing the other to take power. whenever an "alternative" rears its head, it gets ignored and laughed at.
