People who are round and chubby are perceived as being jolly and happy, which is why Santa Claus is so.

You would be too if you had to eat all those cookies, and milk. Sometimes he even gets a beer. I guess also cause he comes out only once a year and sits around making the elves do all the work in the work shop whilst he sits on his rocking chair.
