I assume they pawned the stuff to buy dope cause 'you've got to be high...'

It's still the good old days. but if you lost the ticket only the person whose name the loan is in can redeem the item by bringing their ID. If they're not available, wait til they take it out of pawn and ask to buy it outright, as it would be illegal for them to give you the item without a ticket or you being the person who did it. A letter isn't going to mean jack unless it's a power of attorney, even then it's a long shot.
