It's driven by the need to matter by influencing our surroundings and/or environment.
The basic paths of Budism stem from accepting that we exist, but don't need to matter. Inner peace comes from just existing without needing to influence or affect anything. Just accept that we are as we are and everything else is as it's supposed to be.

Anyone that has self confidence IS powerful. Those that lack self confidence are always looking for more and more social and monetary power to bolster what is essentially a lousy self image.

Because they fear being weak or they dont want to seem to others. And like a battery without charge they fear feeling USELESS! Eventhough its a normal fear Some ppl take it to the extreme where they want to seem like earthly gods in the eyes of others.
