My bf is 41 and shopping for him is difficult. I have found the best approach is to ask him for some suggestions of some things he would like to have that he has not been able to get for himself. Also, keep your ears open for anything he might mention in passing about something he sees that he likes.
But you shouldn't ask us, not every 48 year old man is the same. You should ask him.

None of we men have too many ties and dress shirts. Go to a better Department store or Men's Shop and look at the displays they have. Most every man has a blue blazer so get a shirt and tie that goes well with that. Ties are the Power Look for business today. Also, great look for those special social occasions or a night out at that new restaurant.

What kind of music does he like?? Maybe a record or something like that - kind of nostalgic. Otherwise things like tie pins are always great (i suppose only if he wears ties though!! lol) There are sooo many of those that you can get in any shape style etc. I think something from the heart, maybe you could even make him a gift, that would be truly unique and heartfelt.

I always suggest you can't go wrong in buying something personal, meaning nothing superficial or nothing corney, Novilty gifts are not appropriate, Depending on how well you know him will dictate the intimacy level the gift should be.

If he reads by him a nice collection-set.
If you want him to smell a certian way by him some trendy after shave.
You could get him a watch so every time he looks at he thinks of you...I found when you get to our age what ever the one we love buys us makes us HAPPY...so just go with your heart..

Depends on how close you are to him.
If very close just put a bow on yourself
(gift wrapping optional).
If not that close try something he needs or
wants for the house or his office work.

Depending on how long you've been dating you should be talking enough to know his person interests: music, a hobby, something to that effect. don't make it too expensive if you haven't been together long, but enough money wise to show you care.
