I assume that pune is the base place for your plan.
day 1; pune site seeing by pune darshan bus or taxi(bundi park, saras baug, kelkar museum, etc...)
day 2: drive to Mha'shwar via panchgani(3 hrs drive, to see table land & cave at Panchgini.)
day 3; Maha'shwar siteseeing (actually there are 5 std. tourist circuits which can be seen in 3 days but if u r time bound, see venna lake, strawberry garden nearby, echo point, suicide point, etc..) overnight at Maha'shwar.
day 4: return to pune. take pune-lonavla shuttle train to lonavla. see karla caves, eat chiiki & fudge.
day 5: take train to bombay via neral. from neral take a toy train to matheran.
GENERAL; I do appreciate time limit of every one but to cover the places of ur choice in 4 days shall be hop-hop journey. I recomend u avoid lonavla & matheran to enjoy Maha'shwar & pune properly.

Bus From Mahabaleshwar To Pune

First things first.....

There is no railhead for Mahabaleshwar. You must forget about doing the Mahabaleshwar tour by train.

From Pune you can drive to Mahabaleshwar ( on Kolhapur road drive) Wai city is the important point enroute. From Wai, the turning and climbing ghats section starts. You will reach Panchgani first and about 20 kms ahead is Mahabaleshwar. Max drive should be about 3 hours from Pune. Alternately you can travel by a bus (ST ordinary or PVT deluxe).

Matheran is on the opposite side of the planned Mahabaleshwar tour. For Matheran you can travel in a train from Pune ( get on any train towards Mumbai). Get down at Karjat or if the train halts at Neral get down at Neral. From Neral you get minitrain to Matheran. If the time doesn't suit your tour plan, you will get plentiful of cabs/taxis from Neral station.

Attempt either Mahabaleshwar or Matheran. Both are in opposite direction to each other hence difficult to do both the hill station points in 4 days ( i.e. comfortably).

To me, Mahabaleshwar is a better option than Matheran.
